The importance of nutritional supplements
We can no longer ignore it: nutritional supplements are essential for good health. In this blog, we will take you through the reasons why this is the case and give you tips for good basic supplementation. Finally, you will get to know our free and personal supplement advice!
Why nutritional supplements?
No matter how well you think you are doing, it is quite difficult to get enough nutrients, or vitamins and minerals, these days. Even if you stick to the recommended amounts of vegetables and fruit, it remains a challenge. We will explain why this is by means of three developments.
Soil depletion
More and more research shows that our vegetables and fruit no longer contain the same amount of vitamins and minerals as they did 70 years ago. This is the result of soil depletion, also known as soil impoverishment. Because we have started using agricultural land more and more often and we do not give the soil time to recover, we miss essential vitamins and minerals in the agricultural land and therefore in our food. In addition, there is the (excessive) use of artificial fertilizers, which causes the agricultural land to become depleted. In this development, harvest yield takes precedence over soil quality. And you can not only notice this in the color of vegetables and fruit. The taste also suffers. The taste is often blander and less intense than it should be. This development is especially worrying for people with a plant-based diet, because they are more dependent on vegetables and fruit in comparison.
Use of pesticides
In addition to soil depletion, we also have to deal with the frequent use of pesticides. According to researchers, this also affects the amount of vitamins and minerals that remain after the use of pesticides. These are considerably less. The use not only affects the vitamins and minerals in vegetables and fruit, but also human health. For example, pesticides are associated with lower immunity and respiratory problems. Unfortunately, washing vegetables and fruit is usually not enough to get rid of pesticides. This is because these agents can penetrate the skin. Vegetables and fruit of organic origin are a better alternative. No artificial pesticides are used in organic vegetables and fruit.
Changing eating patterns
Our Western diet has changed considerably in recent decades. We are increasingly consuming foods that are rich in omega 6. This can be found in vegetable oils, such as sunflower, soy and corn oil (think of frying fat) and all hydrogenated fats from a factory, such as margarines. And vegetable oils seem to be the culprit for many chronic diseases. More and more research shows how vegetable oils cause inflammation in the body. Although omega 3 and omega 6 cannot be distinguished from each other microscopically, there is a big difference between these fatty acids for our cells. The large amount of omega 6 is very much out of balance compared to our omega 3 intake. This imbalance can be corrected by adding more omega 3 to our diet.
These developments are worrying because they concern health. A vitamin deficiency can creep in slowly, but when it is there it can have nasty consequences. One such consequence is that our body gets fewer components that it needs to protect us from chronic diseases.
Basic supplementation
Now that you know why it is almost impossible to get enough nutrients from fruits and vegetables, we will help you on your way to replenishing these deficiencies in a natural and healthy way. There are roughly two vitamins and one mineral that almost everyone is deficient in because they are no longer sufficiently present in our fruits and vegetables. These are: vitamin C, vitamin D, and magnesium. To remedy the imbalance of omega 6 and omega 3, omega 3 has also been added to the basic supplementation. We will explain them below.
An important antioxidant that protects your body against harmful radicals from outside. Radicals are aggressive substances that can damage your cells. Think for example of (cigarette) smoke and stress. Antioxidants make these substances harmless and help you to stay healthy. If you get enough vitamin, your body can better absorb iron from food and you support the immune system. This antioxidant also contributes to the formation of collagen, which is important for the blood vessels and supple veins. It is also an important vitamin for the bones and the production and construction of cartilage (in the joints).
Many people know that vitamin D is important for maintaining strong bones. But did you know that vitamin D also plays a role in maintaining strong and flexible muscles and also helps with your resistance? Enough reason to make sure you produce or consume enough of it! There are two types of vitamin D: vitamin D2 and vitamin D3. Both types occur in nature and can therefore be called natural. However, vitamin D3 is known as the 'natural form' of vitamin D3, because it is the body's own. Goldea's Vitamin D3 is 100% plant-based.
The fatty acids EPA and DHA together make a positive contribution to the normal functioning of the heart. In addition, DHA plays a role in the functioning of the brain and contributes to the maintenance of normal vision. Most people know omega 3 from fish oil. But did you know that fish do not produce omega 3 themselves? They get omega 3 from the algae they eat. The fish is therefore actually an intermediary. The Vegan Omega 3 from Goldea Health is made on the basis of these algae and is therefore 100% plant-based!
An essential mineral involved in over 600 enzyme-driven biological reactions that take place in the body. Magnesium contributes to the reduction of fatigue and mental resilience and energy. Magnesium is also important for the muscles. Our Power 5 Magnesium supplement contains 5 organic forms of magnesium. We have combined the five organic forms of magnesium bisglycinate, citrate, malate, gluconate and taurate in one supplement because of their specific applications. Biologically bound forms of magnesium are better absorbed by the body.
We have conveniently bundled these four supplements in the Daily Essential Pack !
